Washington (HRNW)-\u00a0US Special Envoy for Syria and US Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack has said that Israel\u2019s control over the Syrian Golan Heights is contrary to UN resolutions and the international legal order.<\/p>\n

Speaking to journalists in Washington, Barrack said that under UN resolutions and international law, the Golan Heights are considered Syrian territory. He noted that Israel continues to control the territory despite international objections.<\/p>\n

In 1981, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 497, declaring Israel\u2019s decision to impose its laws, jurisdiction and administration on the Golan Heights \u201cnull and void\u201d and without legal effect under international law.<\/p>\n

Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria during the 1967 war and later extended its laws and administration over the territory in 1981. The United Nations and most of the international community do not recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights.<\/p>\n
