Bogota (HRNW)-\u00a0Rescue operations have entered a critical phase after a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck Colombia, with authorities reporting that the death toll has risen to 265, while more than 3,500 people have been injured.<\/p>\n
Authorities said the earthquake caused widespread destruction across parts of western Colombia and is being described as the most powerful earthquake to hit the country this century.<\/p>\n
As rescue teams approached the crucial 72-hour window following the disaster, efforts intensified to locate survivors trapped beneath collapsed buildings. Experts consider the first 72 hours after a major earthquake particularly important for rescue operations, although survivors can still be found later.<\/p>\n
Local authorities said approximately 500 people remain missing, while more than 9,550 homes have been destroyed. Rescue teams continue searching through the rubble for signs of life.<\/p>\n
The hardest-hit cities include Pereira and Cali, where authorities reported 83 deaths in Pereira and 74 in Cali. Cali, Colombia\u2019s third-largest city, suffered extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure.<\/p>\n
Rescue teams in Cali worked throughout the night to clear debris using cranes, trained dogs and specialized equipment, assisted by volunteers. In some locations, rescuers have been removing rubble by hand while listening for people trapped underneath.<\/p>\n
Rescue efforts were further intensified after possible signs of life were detected beneath a destroyed bakery in Pereira. Specialized equipment reportedly detected minor movements and sounds, while the family of the person believed to be trapped waited anxiously at the scene.<\/p>\n
Colombian citizens have also joined relief efforts, providing victims with water, food and other essential supplies, while blood donation centers have reported long lines of volunteers.<\/p>\n
President Abelardo de la Esperanza visited affected areas and announced an emergency fund to support the reconstruction of damaged hospitals, schools, homes and other infrastructure.<\/p>\n
The government has also announced an economic emergency in response to the scale of the devastation, although details of the measures have yet to be fully disclosed.<\/p>\n
A three-day national mourning period has been declared across Colombia as authorities and humanitarian agencies continue efforts to rescue missing people, provide medical treatment to the injured and restore essential services.<\/p>\n
