Washington (HRNW)-\u00a0Democratic senators in the US Congress have demanded an investigation into conditions aboard the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln following reports of food shortages, contaminated water, plumbing problems and increasing stress among the crew.<\/p>\n
According to AFP, Senator Richard Blumenthal has written to US Defense Secretary Pat Hegseth, seeking details about the conditions faced by approximately 5,000 American military personnel aboard the carrier.<\/p>\n
Blumenthal said the USS Abraham Lincoln has been deployed for more than 250 consecutive days and has not returned to port for more than 200 days, describing the prolonged deployment as a record that requires serious attention.<\/p>\n
Reports have highlighted shortages of basic necessities, concerns over drinking water, plumbing problems, deck security and deteriorating mental health among crew members during the extended deployment.<\/p>\n
The senator expressed particular concern about the mental health of personnel who have remained away from their families for extended periods.<\/p>\n
Families of USS Abraham Lincoln personnel have also reportedly met with US Navy leadership in recent days, raising concerns about food shortages, living conditions and uncertainty over when their loved ones would return home.<\/p>\n
Reports have further alleged that some personnel experienced severe psychological stress and that there were incidents involving suicide attempts aboard the ship. However, full details of these reports have not been officially disclosed.<\/p>\n
The USS Abraham Lincoln began its current mission from San Diego, California, on November 21, 2025. It was initially deployed to the South China Sea before being moved to the Middle East ahead of US and Israeli military operations against Iran.<\/p>\n
US senators have emphasized that although extended military deployments may be necessary for national security, the basic needs, health and well-being of service members must not be overlooked.<\/p>\n
If an investigation confirms the reported problems, the US Navy could face pressure to review policies concerning prolonged deployments, crew welfare, mental health support and basic facilities aboard its vessels.<\/p>\n
