Windhoek, Namibia (HRNW):<\/strong> Women human rights defenders, feminist activists, and civil-society representatives have gathered in Windhoek<\/strong> for the African Feminist Forum 2026<\/strong>, held from 10\u201312 August<\/strong>, focusing on collective action, feminist organizing, and strategies for advancing gender justice across Africa.<\/p>\n

The African Feminist Forum, organized by the African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF)<\/strong>, provides a platform for African feminists and activists from the continent and diaspora to discuss current challenges and develop strategies for strengthening feminist movements. The 2026 forum was designed as a politically grounded and collectively safe space for participants from diverse backgrounds.<\/p>\n

The forum particularly encourages participation by young and emerging feminists, frontline activists, Indigenous participants, and LBTQI+ feminists<\/strong>, reflecting an emphasis on broad participation and movement-building. Organizers say the forum seeks to avoid excessive institutionalization of feminist agendas and instead encourage bottom-up organizing.<\/p>\n

The gathering comes amid a broader series of African civil-society events addressing women’s rights, gender equality, climate justice, civic participation, reproductive rights, and democratic governance. Other major NGO events are also taking place across Africa during August, including the MenEngage Africa SRHR Learning and Exchange Symposium in Mombasa and the YouthHubAfrica Men’s Summit in Abuja.<\/p>\n

At the same time, Urgent Action Fund-Africa<\/strong> has been seeking proposals from women’s rights organizations and networks across Africa, with funding intended to support women’s human rights leaders and organizations advancing democracy, human rights, gender justice, environmental and climate justice, and conflict transformation. The application deadline was 12 August 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The combination of regional feminist gatherings and dedicated funding initiatives demonstrates the continuing role of African civil society in promoting women’s rights, inclusive governance, protection of human rights defenders, and grassroots participation.<\/p>\n
