Dakar, Senegal (HRNW):<\/strong> UNICEF has issued an urgent regional appeal following the spread of cholera across West and Central Africa<\/strong>, warning that the outbreak is placing millions of children at risk. In an update published 11 August 2026<\/strong>, UNICEF called for immediate action to strengthen disease prevention, treatment, clean-water access, sanitation, and community health measures.<\/p>\n

The children’s organization is working with governments and humanitarian partners to support emergency responses, including access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene services, health information, and treatment for children and families affected by outbreaks.<\/p>\n

UNICEF has emphasized that children are particularly vulnerable to the consequences of cholera and other waterborne diseases. Rapid detection, access to treatment, vaccination where appropriate, and improvements in water and sanitation infrastructure are essential to preventing deaths and stopping transmission.<\/p>\n

The latest warning comes amid wider pressure on humanitarian systems caused by international aid reductions and growing emergency needs<\/strong>. UNICEF has called for flexible and sustained humanitarian financing so that assistance can reach vulnerable children and communities quickly.<\/p>\n

The organization says its broader Humanitarian Action for Children 2026<\/strong> appeal seeks US$7.66 billion<\/strong> to provide life-saving assistance to approximately 73 million children<\/strong> living through humanitarian crises in 133 countries and territories.<\/p>\n

UNICEF’s current cholera response highlights the close connection between children’s rights, public health, clean water, sanitation, emergency preparedness, and humanitarian assistance.<\/p>\n
