Tokyo, Japan (HRNW):<\/strong> Human Rights Watch has used Safe Sport Day on 8 August 2026<\/strong> to call for stronger protection of athletes, particularly children, women, and people with disabilities, amid continuing concerns about physical, verbal, and sexual abuse in sporting environments in Japan.<\/p>\n

HRW highlighted concerns that abusive coaching practices can become normalized within school sports, federations, and elite training programmes. The organization referred to its earlier research documenting physical violence against child athletes and argued that sport should provide opportunities for healthy physical, mental, and personal development rather than expose young people to abuse.<\/p>\n

The organization has called for stronger safeguarding systems, accountability mechanisms, and effective enforcement of protections for athletes. It also emphasized that survivors and families should be able to report abuse safely and obtain meaningful remedies.<\/p>\n

Safe Sport Day provides an international platform for organizations, sporting bodies, athletes, coaches, and governments to promote safer and more inclusive sporting environments.
