Beirut\/Damascus (HRNW)-\u00a0Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem has said he has no objection to meeting Syria’s current leadership and that a formal meeting between the two sides could take place when the time is appropriate.<\/p>\n
In a televised address, Naim Qassem said Hezbollah seeks positive, brotherly, and cooperative relations with Syria, adding that there is no obstacle to holding a public meeting if both parties consider it suitable.<\/p>\n
This marks the first time the Hezbollah leader has publicly expressed support for the possibility of direct contacts or meetings with Syria’s new leadership.<\/p>\n
Hezbollah has supported the government of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad throughout much of the Syrian civil war. During that period, Syria was also regarded as a key route for the transfer of weapons and other supplies from Iran to Lebanon.<\/p>\n
