New Delhi, India (HRNW):<\/strong> Amnesty International has joined other civil society organizations in urging the Indian government to withdraw recent amendments to foreign-funding regulations, warning that the changes could further restrict the ability of independent NGOs and civil society organizations to operate freely. The issue has become a significant current human-rights debate concerning freedom of association and civic space in India.<\/p>\n

The organization says the amended framework increases restrictions on groups receiving foreign contributions and could create additional legal and administrative obstacles for organizations working on human rights, humanitarian assistance, environmental protection, social development, and other public-interest issues. Amnesty and partner organizations have called for a framework that respects the right of civil society organizations to seek and use resources in accordance with international human rights standards.<\/p>\n

Amnesty International has emphasized that independent civil society plays an important role in democratic societies by monitoring government actions, providing assistance to vulnerable communities, documenting human rights concerns, and contributing to public debate. Restrictions that make legitimate NGO activity more difficult, the organization argues, can weaken civic participation and accountability.<\/p>\n

The development comes amid broader international concern about shrinking civic space. Human rights organizations have increasingly highlighted the importance of allowing NGOs, journalists, activists, and community organizations to operate without disproportionate administrative, financial, or legal restrictions.<\/p>\n

Amnesty International continues its global work through research, campaigns, advocacy, urgent actions, and engagement with governments and international institutions. Its July 2026 agenda includes issues ranging from civil society restrictions in India and migration cooperation between the EU and Tunisia to freedom of expression, political detention, children’s rights, and international justice.<\/p>\n
