Karachi (HRNW)<\/strong> \u2013 Despite the arrival of imported Iranian tomatoes, consumers in Karachi have received little relief as tomato prices have surged further, reaching Rs. 450 to Rs. 500 per kilogram<\/strong> across several markets.<\/p>\n

According to market sources, many vendors are selling Iranian and Quetta-grown tomatoes at Rs. 450\u2013500 per kilogram<\/strong>, or Rs. 110\u2013125 per quarter kilogram (250 grams)<\/strong>. Smaller-sized and unripe tomatoes are also reportedly being sold for around Rs. 400 per kilogram<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Only a few weeks ago, tomatoes were available for Rs. 60 to Rs. 80 per kilogram<\/strong>. However, prices have risen sharply in recent days, with some consumers claiming that a single tomato now costs nearly Rs. 50<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Wholesale traders attribute the sudden increase to reduced domestic production, seasonal supply shortages, and an imbalance between demand and supply<\/strong>. They explained that tomatoes are primarily supplied from Sindh and southern Punjab during winter, followed by central Punjab. With Punjab’s supply season ending, tomatoes are currently arriving mainly from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, where limited supply has contributed to higher prices.<\/p>\n

Residents have criticized the authorities for failing to effectively regulate prices, alleging that some retailers are charging arbitrary rates well above official price lists, making tomatoes increasingly unaffordable for ordinary consumers.<\/p>\n

Citizens have urged the government and local administration to take immediate action against hoarding and profiteering, enforce official pricing mechanisms, and provide relief to consumers facing rising food costs.<\/p>\n
