Gangtok (HRNW)-\u00a0A tunnel under construction for a hydroelectric project in the northeastern Indian state of Sikkim collapsed following an explosion, leaving at least 12 workers dead and several others trapped.<\/p>\n
According to Indian media, a total of 27 workers were present in different sections of the tunnel when the incident occurred. Only two workers managed to escape on their own.<\/p>\n
Superintendent of Police Sonam D. Bhutia said that the bodies of 12 workers have been recovered so far, while rescue teams are continuing the search for the remaining 13 workers. Rescue operations are being hampered by heavy debris, smoke, and toxic gases inside the tunnel.<\/p>\n
The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC), which is overseeing the project, said the explosion occurred after methane gas was released from underground rock formations, causing smoke and toxic gases to spread throughout the tunnel.<\/p>\n
Methane is a highly flammable natural gas that can accumulate in underground rock layers. Officials said even a small spark can trigger a powerful explosion if the gas is suddenly released during excavation.<\/p>\n
Authorities have identified seven of the victims so far, including one worker from Sikkim and others from West Bengal, Assam, and Uttarakhand. The identification process for the remaining victims is ongoing.<\/p>\n
Expressing grief over the tragedy, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang announced the formation of a special investigation team to determine the exact cause of the accident. Officials said the final cause of the deaths will be confirmed after post-mortem examinations and a technical investigation.<\/p>\n
The tunnel was being constructed to channel water from the Teesta River to the turbines of a major hydroelectric power project, one of the largest infrastructure projects in Sikkim.<\/p>\n
