Karachi (HRNW)<\/strong> \u2013 The Sindh High Court has restricted the use of unclear and general terms such as \u201cWeed\u201d<\/strong> in police documents, FIRs, recovery memos, and investigation reports related to narcotics cases, directing authorities to use legally recognized terminology.<\/p>\n

Justice Amjad Ali Sehto issued guidelines to the Chief Secretary Sindh, Inspector General of Police Sindh, and Anti-Narcotics authorities, stating that only terms recognized under law and official records should be used in legal and administrative documents.<\/p>\n

The court directed that instead of using the term \u201cWeed\u201d<\/strong>, police and investigating authorities should mention legally recognized terms such as \u201cCannabis (Bhang), Charas, or Ganja\u201d<\/strong> in FIRs, recovery documents, and investigation reports.<\/p>\n

Justice Amjad Ali Sehto observed that the use of unclear or non-legal terminology creates ambiguity in criminal cases and may affect the judicial process.<\/p>\n

The directions were issued during the hearing of a case involving accused Iftikhar Hussain<\/strong>, who was booked at Napier Police Station in a case involving the alleged recovery of 560 grams of so-called \u201cWeed.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The High Court granted post-arrest bail to Iftikhar Hussain against surety bonds of Rs50,000<\/strong>. The court noted that the accused had remained in custody for nearly two months, while no significant progress had been made in the trial.<\/p>\n

The court observed that the punishment for the alleged offence ranges from six months to three years<\/strong>, and the matter did not fall under a prohibited category where bail restrictions would apply. The court stated that granting bail is a fundamental principle of law when legal conditions are fulfilled.<\/p>\n

From a human rights perspective, the use of clear legal language, transparent investigations, fair trial guarantees, and protection of the rights of accused persons are essential components of a just legal system. Experts emphasize that accurate terminology in official records helps improve judicial clarity and ensures a fair legal process.<\/p>\n
