Lahore (HRNW)-\u00a0A comprehensive smog control crackdown is underway in Lahore on the directives of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif and Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, with authorities introducing stricter measures to curb air pollution.<\/p>\n
The Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore has announced that the driving licenses of drivers operating smoke-emitting vehicles will be suspended as part of the campaign.<\/p>\n
CTO Lahore Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi said that, in addition to driving licenses, the route permits of commercial vehicles violating environmental regulations will also be suspended. He emphasized that strict action is necessary to protect public health and ensure road safety.<\/p>\n
According to the CTO, the entry of soil, sand, gravel trolleys, and dumpers without protective tarpaulin covers into Lahore is prohibited, and violators are being issued traffic challans. During the last financial year, challans were issued to 114,378 smoke-emitting vehicles.<\/p>\n
Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi said that 1,401 cases were registered during the smog control campaign. Action was also taken against 53,599 vehicles transporting sand, soil, and other materials without tarpaulin covers, while 188,374 unfit and dilapidated vehicles were proceeded against for violating traffic and environmental regulations.<\/p>\n
The CTO added that special operations are being conducted at soil, sand, and mining sites, and tractor-trolleys are not allowed to operate without tarpaulin covers, water sprinkling, and other prescribed safety measures. DSPs have been directed to intensify enforcement at all major entry and exit points of the city.<\/p>\n
According to the CTO, smoke-emitting vehicles are also being detected through an artificial intelligence-based monitoring system. Letters have been sent to several government and semi-government institutions directing them to repair smoke-emitting vehicles, while authorities have adopted a zero-tolerance policy against vehicles contributing to environmental pollution.<\/p>\n
