Caracas (HRNW)-\u00a0The death toll from two powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela last week has risen to nearly 2,000, while thousands of people have been injured and displaced.<\/p>\n
According to authorities, the intensity and frequency of aftershocks have declined, allowing relief and recovery operations to accelerate across the affected areas.<\/p>\n
National Assembly Speaker Jorge Rodriguez said during a televised briefing that more than 10,000 people were injured in the earthquakes, while approximately 15,000 residents have been displaced from their homes and relocated to temporary shelters.<\/p>\n
He did not provide an official figure for those still missing. However, opposition figures estimate that more than 40,000 people remain unaccounted for, although these figures could not be independently verified.<\/p>\n
The two powerful earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, struck Venezuela on June 24 less than a minute apart. The quakes caused widespread destruction, collapsing numerous buildings, damaging major highways, and severely affecting critical infrastructure, including the country’s main international airport.<\/p>\n
