Tehran (HRNW)- Iran\u2019s judiciary has announced the execution of two individuals allegedly linked to anti-government protests earlier this year, amid growing international concern over the country\u2019s use of capital punishment in security-related cases.<\/p>\n
According to the judiciary-run Mizan News Agency, the executed individuals were identified as Javad Zamani and Abolfazl Saeedi, who were described by Iranian authorities as armed ringleaders of the protests.<\/p>\n
Iranian officials stated that both men were convicted on charges including disrupting public order, conspiring against national security, and damaging public and private property. Mizan News reported that the court found them guilty after trial proceedings and issued death sentences, which were carried out today. Authorities further claimed that the accused were provided full legal rights and opportunities during the judicial process.<\/p>\n
Human rights organizations and international bodies have expressed concern over the growing number of executions in Iran. The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker T\u00fcrk, said that at least 40 people have been executed in Iran so far in 2026 in cases related to \u201cnational security.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added that 18 of those executed were convicted in connection with protests, which he described as a fundamental right of citizens. T\u00fcrk criticized Iranian authorities for what he called an intensified crackdown aimed at suppressing dissent and urged Tehran to halt executions in protest-related cases while ensuring fair trials and adherence to international human rights standards.<\/p>\n
Iranian authorities, however, maintain that all actions taken against individuals involved in undermining public order and national security are conducted strictly within the framework of the law. They have also rejected allegations of unfair trials, while rights groups continue to question the transparency of proceedings in such cases.<\/p>\n
