Oslo (HRNW) \u2013 A new report released by the Norwegian-based Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) has revealed that the number of state conflicts worldwide in 2025 reached its highest level since World War II, with 65 state-involved conflicts recorded across the globe.<\/p>\n
According to the report, this is the highest number of such conflicts since 1946. PRIO researcher Siri Aas Rostad stated that Israel was involved in at least five separate conflicts during 2025, including military operations in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, Iran, and Yemen, leading researchers to describe it as one of the most militarily active countries of the year.<\/p>\n
The report also highlighted rising global tensions following the return of US President Donald Trump, noting increased geopolitical divisions and trade disputes. Researchers found that direct military conflicts between states doubled to eight during 2025, including the Russia-Ukraine war, India-Pakistan border tensions, Afghanistan-Pakistan clashes, Israel\u2019s military operations in Syria, and the Cambodia-Thailand conflict.<\/p>\n
According to the study, 2025 became the third deadliest year since the end of the Cold War, with approximately 245,000 people killed due to wars and political violence. Deaths resulting from attacks directly targeting civilians also rose dramatically, increasing from about 14,200 in 2024 to 76,500 in 2025.<\/p>\n
The report identified Sudan as a major contributor to the rise in civilian casualties, particularly due to violence, sieges, and massacres in El Fasher, Darfur, where an estimated 60,000 people lost their lives.<\/p>\n
Researchers further noted that multiple large-scale conflicts have been occurring simultaneously over the past several years, significantly weakening global peace and stability. Africa was reported as the most conflict-affected region with 29 state conflicts, followed by Asia, the Middle East, the Americas, and Europe.<\/p>\n
Experts warned that if the current trend continues, the world could face even greater threats to peace and security in the coming years.<\/p>\n
