Lahore (HRNW)- Skywatchers and astronomy enthusiasts will have the opportunity to witness a rare celestial event tonight as the \u201cBlue Moon\u201d appears in the night sky.<\/p>\n
According to astronomers, the full moon is occurring for the second time in May 2026, a phenomenon known in astronomy as a Blue Moon. Such an event is uncommon and typically occurs once every two to three years.<\/p>\n
The Blue Moon will be visible in Lahore after moonrise this evening. Astronomical data indicates that the moon will rise at approximately 7:22 pm and remain visible throughout the night. Experts say the most impressive views are expected between 7:30 pm and 10:00 pm on the eastern horizon, while clear weather conditions will allow observation for much of the night.<\/p>\n
Professor Dr. Syed Aamir Mahmood, Chairman of the Department of Space Science at Punjab University, explained that the term \u201cBlue Moon\u201d does not refer to the moon\u2019s color. Instead, it is an astronomical term used when two full moons occur within the same calendar month. The first full moon of May 2026 appeared on May 1, while the second is occurring on May 31.<\/p>\n
He further noted that this Blue Moon is also classified as a \u201cMicromoon,\u201d meaning the moon is relatively farther from Earth in its orbit. As a result, it may appear slightly smaller and dimmer than a typical full moon.<\/p>\n
According to astronomical calculations, the moon reached its full phase at around 1:45 pm Pakistan time, but it was below the horizon at that moment. Therefore, the best opportunity for citizens to observe the phenomenon will be tonight.<\/p>\n
Experts recommend viewing the Blue Moon from open spaces, parks, or rooftops of tall buildings facing east, where light pollution is minimal and the sky is clearer.<\/p>\n
