Karachi (HRNW)- The Sindh government has accelerated efforts for water sector reforms and modernization of the province\u2019s irrigation system in a bid to improve water management, strengthen agriculture, and address climate-related challenges. An important meeting on the World Bank-supported SWAT project was held in Karachi under the chairmanship of Sindh Minister for Irrigation and Planning Jam Khan Shoro, attended by a World Bank delegation that included Task Team Leader Francois Ony-Mous, Senior Water Resources Specialist Zillalam Makinon, and Senior Water Resources Management Specialist Heba Ahmed.<\/p>\n

Senior provincial officials, including SIDA Managing Director Mansoor Memon, PCMU\u2019s Nazir Ahmed, and other concerned officers, also attended the meeting and provided updates on the progress of ongoing projects. The World Bank delegation briefed the provincial minister on the overall development of the SWAT project, achievements made so far, and the future roadmap for further improvements in Sindh\u2019s water management system.<\/p>\n

According to officials, the meeting discussed drafting a new water law aimed at improving the province\u2019s water system, preparing a comprehensive water management plan for Sindh, and adopting modern technologies for canal repair and irrigation modernization. Special emphasis was placed on equitable water distribution, reducing wastage, and providing improved irrigation facilities to farmers.<\/p>\n

Minister Jam Khan Shoro stated that under the Sindh Barrages Improvement Project, work on replacing gates at Guddu Barrage and Sukkur Barrage is progressing rapidly, which is expected to significantly enhance water delivery and ensure more efficient use of water resources across Sindh. He added that the provincial government is taking serious reform measures to strengthen agriculture and the economy, with sustainable water management being key to making Sindh more resilient and better prepared for future climate challenges.<\/p>\n
