Islamabad (HRNW)- An important consultative meeting of the national leadership was held in the federal capital under the chairmanship of Asif Ali Zardari, in which Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, federal ministers, Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, National Security Advisor Lieutenant General Asim Malik and the Chief Ministers of the four provinces participated.<\/p>\n
According to government sources, the meeting considered the proposal to implement a smart lockdown across the country, however, the provincial governments opposed it and recommended that the federation not impose a lockdown. Along with this, the determination to further tighten austerity measures was expressed.<\/p>\n
The meeting also emphasized ensuring full implementation of measures for energy and fuel conservation and for the provinces to contribute to a relief package of Rs 254 billion. The President directed that all possible steps be taken to reduce the burden of rising prices and a coordinated national strategy be adopted to protect the people from the effects of inflation. The meeting also reviewed the energy crisis, the global situation and regional security issues.<\/p>\n
President Asif Ali Zardari said that coordinated decisions on economy, energy, food and security issues are inevitable and the vulnerable sections will not be left alone in difficult times. He also stressed on conducting public awareness campaigns to reduce fuel consumption and promote public transport.<\/p>\n
Government members informed the meeting that despite the global crisis, there is no disruption in fuel supply in the country and there are ample reserves of oil and gas, while arrangements are also underway for the future.<\/p>\n
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that proposals to increase oil prices have been rejected, and it has been decided to immediately close 60 percent of government vehicles as part of the reduction in government expenditure. He further said that the funds generated from the savings are being used for public relief.<\/p>\n
Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar briefed the meeting on contacts and meetings with the leadership of Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, while the participants were also informed about the upcoming visit to Beijing.<\/p>\n
