Karachi (HRNW)<\/a>–<\/strong> The increasing population pressure on the city has become a major challenge regarding the Greater Karachi Plan 2047.<\/p>\n

The Sindh government is working on a new master plan for Karachi, known as the Greater Karachi Regional Plan 2047. Although key details of the plan have not yet been shared, experts believe that the rapidly growing population has become the biggest obstacle to sustainable urban development.<\/p>\n

According to official data, Karachi is the only city whose population has increased 44 times since the formation of Pakistan \u2014 from 450,000 to more than 20 million today.<\/p>\n

The 2023 census shows that Karachi’s population grew by 4 million in just 5 years, rising from 14.8 million in 2017 to 18.8 million in 2023 \u2014 a rate unmatched by any other major city. Meanwhile, Peshawar’s population decreased by 1.9 million as many people migrated to Karachi for employment.<\/p>\n

A recent report by the Korea Green Growth Trust Fund notes that Pakistan’s population growth rate is 1.5%, while Karachi’s is 6%, predicting the city’s population will reach 28 million by 2030.<\/p>\n

Experts say rapid migration from other provinces \u2014 and from countries like Afghanistan and Bangladesh \u2014 is the primary reason for the city’s expansion. Urban planner Zahid Farooq stresses that reducing population pressure requires creating employment opportunities in other provinces so that people do not depend solely on Karachi.<\/p>\n

He added that although multiple master plans have been made in the past, none were implemented. He urged the government to involve the public in the new plan, gather input from various sectors, and ensure the plan is not designed behind closed doors.<\/p>\n

PPP Karachi leader Senator Waqar Mehdi said the plan is being prepared with help from international experts to meet the city’s needs for the next 50 years. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive and forward-looking strategy.<\/p>\n

Since 1952, numerous master plans \u2014 including the Karachi Development Plan 1974-85 and the Karachi Strategic Development Plan 2020 \u2014 were created but never implemented. Currently, Karachi is divided among 20 administrative bodies, and only 31% of the city falls under KMC’s jurisdiction, complicating effective governance.<\/p>\n
