Tehran (HRNW)-\u00a0A member of Iran\u2019s powerful Assembly of Experts, Ayatollah Mohammad Mehdi Mirbagheri, has stated that a majority consensus has been reached on selecting a successor to former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.<\/p>\n
Mirbagheri said that while considerable progress has been made, some obstacles remain in the process. According to Iran\u2019s constitution, the Supreme Leader is elected by the 88-member Assembly of Experts.<\/p>\n
Ali Khamenei, who served as Supreme Leader for nearly 37 years, was killed in a joint US-Israeli attack in Tehran on February 28, which marked the beginning of a war now spreading across several Middle Eastern countries.<\/p>\n
Amid these tensions, the Israeli military has warned that members of the Assembly could be targeted if they convene to choose a new Supreme Leader.<\/p>\n
Another member of the Assembly, Hojatoleslam Jafari, told Fars News Agency that the Iranian public will soon be satisfied with the decision, noting that while the delay is concerning, caution is necessary under the current circumstances.<\/p>\n
Ayatollah Mohsen Heydari Al-Katheer also said that traditional meetings of Assembly members are not possible at this time, but a candidate has already been selected based on Khamenei\u2019s advice that the next Supreme Leader should be feared by enemies rather than liked.<\/p>\n
Media reports indicate that US President Donald Trump recently rejected the possibility of Khamenei\u2019s son, Mojtaba Khamenei, becoming Iran\u2019s next Supreme Leader.<\/p>\n
