This monthly spike has pushed Pakistan\u2019s total central government debt to a staggering <b data-path-to-node=\"1\" data-index-in-node=\"343\">Rs 79.322 trillion<\/b>.<\/p>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"2\"><b data-path-to-node=\"2\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Breakdown of Domestic and External Debt<\/b><\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"3\">The SBP report highlights a continued heavy reliance on local financing to bridge the fiscal deficit. The debt composition as of January 2026 is as follows:<\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"4\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"4,0,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"4,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Domestic Debt:<\/b> Increased by <b data-path-to-node=\"4,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"28\">Rs 615 billion<\/b> in a single month, reaching a total of <b data-path-to-node=\"4,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"82\">Rs 55.978 trillion<\/b>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"4,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"4,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">External Debt:<\/b> Rose by <b data-path-to-node=\"4,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"23\">Rs 178 billion<\/b>, bringing the total foreign debt stock to <b data-path-to-node=\"4,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"80\">Rs 23.344 trillion<\/b>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"5\"><b data-path-to-node=\"5\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Fiscal Year Performance<\/b><\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6\">According to the central bank, the government has borrowed a total of <b data-path-to-node=\"6\" data-index-in-node=\"70\">Rs 1.434 trillion<\/b> during the first seven months of the current fiscal year (July 2025 \u2013 January 2026). Economists note that while the government had seen some moderation in debt levels late last year, the recent escalation in regional tensions and higher interest payments have intensified the need for fresh borrowing. Despite these rising figures, the SBP\u2019s recent Monetary Policy reports maintain that ongoing fiscal consolidation and robust workers&#8217; remittances are helping to manage the overall debt-to-GDP ratio, which currently hovers around <b data-path-to-node=\"6\" data-index-in-node=\"619\">70%<\/b>.<\/p>\n<hr data-path-to-node=\"7\" \/>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8\">Understanding national debt and fiscal policy is crucial for assessing the country&#8217;s economic future.
