Montreal (HRNW)– The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has estimated that global air travel could reach 12.4 billion passengers by 2050.
The revelation was made during the launch of the organization’s strategic plan for the next 25 years on the occasion of World Civil Aviation Day. The ICAO warned that new types of autonomous aircraft are soon to enter air service, which will require updated management and safety measures to safely integrate into the already complex air system.

With increasing air traffic, the organization highlighted emerging challenges related to security, safety, and cybersecurity that must be addressed. ICAO also reiterated its commitment to reducing air pollution globally. The Strategic Plan 2026–2050 focuses on achieving the global goal of net zero carbon emissions in international aviation by 2050.
The new ICAO plan identifies several “high-priority enablers” that will play a key role in addressing the complex challenges facing the aviation industry in the coming decades. According to the organization, these enablers will make the global aviation system stronger, more sustainable, and more inclusive, while continuously reviewing progress.
