HRCP Demands Immediate Release of Journalist Syed Muhammad Aslam Shah, Condemns Use of PECA

Karachi (HRNW)- The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has demanded the immediate release of journalist Syed Muhammad Aslam Shah, who has been detained by the police on the request of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) under the controversial Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA).

According to the HRCP, the complaint against journalist Syed Muhammad Aslam Shah was filed by a civil servant attached to the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board. The organization expressed deep concern over the move, saying that attempts to suppress critical voices are against freedom of expression.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, while expressing full solidarity with the Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJ), strongly condemned the practice of harassing journalists and silencing dissenting opinions.

HRCP says the use of controversial laws against journalists poses a serious threat to democratic values, press freedom and fundamental human rights, which must be stopped immediately.
