Historic 154-Year-Old Vondelpark Church Destroyed by Massive Fire

Amsterdam (HRNW)- A massive fire engulfed the 154-year-old Vondelpark Church near Amsterdam’s famous Vondelpark, causing its tower to collapse and leaving severe damage to one of the city’s key historical and cultural landmarks.

Built in 1872, the Vondelpark Church has been an important part of Amsterdam’s historical identity and is located near the city center, close to Leidseplein, the Rijksmuseum, and the Van Gogh Museum.

The fire broke out shortly after midnight and spread rapidly due to the large wooden structure and strong winds. Fortunately, the church was empty at the time. Authorities declared a regional emergency, evacuated dozens of nearby homes, and closed all surrounding roads due to thick smoke.

Videos circulating on social media showed the church’s tall tower fully engulfed in flames. The Amsterdam-Amsterdam Safety Region confirmed that the building could not be saved, and the church’s historical identity was severely damaged.

Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsma described the incident as “very serious and heartbreaking,” emphasizing that the top priority is the safety of nearby residents and protection of homes.
