Karachi (HRNW)- Majlis-e-Wahdat Muslimeen Chairman Senator Allama Raja Nasir Abbas Jafri, along with Opposition Leader National Assembly Mahmood Khan Achakzai and MWM Vice Chairman Allama Ahmed Iqbal Rizvi, visited the Gul Plaza commercial center last night and expressed grief over the loss of life and property due to the fire, calling it a national tragedy. Rescue agencies, fire brigade and administration briefed him about their activities. Allama Nasir Abbas Jafri said that the said accident is evidence of serious failure of safety arrangements, a complete and transparent investigation of which is indispensable so that such tragic incidents can be prevented in the future. He demanded strict action against the responsible elements and immediate and appropriate financial assistance to the affected families. He said that the government and the concerned institutions should take practical steps for the rehabilitation of the victims, treatment of the injured and compensation for the losses of the affected traders. This is not the first accident in Shahr-e-Quaid. Similar incidents have also occurred in the past, but the government has not learned this lesson. Fire safety arrangements in all commercial buildings of the city should be reviewed. The burning of more than a thousand shops, the loss of six precious human lives, the injury of dozens of people and the disappearance of dozens of citizens are clear evidence that the emergency response system in a mega city like Karachi has completely failed. It is extremely regrettable that despite the fire being contained in the initial stage, timely and effective action was not taken, which raises questions about modern equipment, trained staff and a clear strategy. The ground facts and statements of traders and eyewitnesses refute the government’s claims as the rescue operation is still ongoing. If the system had been effective, dozens of families would not be wandering around in search of their loved ones today. We demand that this tragedy be investigated impartially, at the judicial level. Allama Raja Nasir Abbas expressed his condolences to the families of those who died in the tragedy and expressed sympathy to the affected families, saying that this tragedy is a great shock for the entire city. He prayed for forgiveness for the deceased and for patience for the bereaved families. Allama Sadiq Jafri, Allama Mubashir Hassan, Razi Haider and other leaders were also present on the occasion.
