Greek Court Acquits Migrant Rescue Volunteers

Lesbos, Greece (HRNW) — A court on the island of Lesbos has acquitted 24 humanitarian workers, including Syrian refugee and Olympic swimmer Sarah Mardini, of charges related to aiding migrant rescues in the Aegean Sea. The group, affiliated with Emergency Response Centre International, had faced accusations of espionage and facilitating illegal entry.
Human rights organizations such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch called the decision a victory for humanitarian principles but warned that Europe’s tightening migration policies continue to criminalize compassion.
