Islamabad (HRNW)– Field Marshal Asim Munir has officially assumed the position of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of Pakistan, and will serve in this role along with his responsibilities as Army Chief until November 29, 2027.
Following legislation passed in November 2024, the tenure of all service chiefs has been extended to five years, ensuring continuity and stability at the top of the armed forces. This law is already being implemented, with Air Chief Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu currently serving under the same legal framework. His appointment, effective March 19, 2021, included a one-year extension ending March 19, 2025, but under the new legislation, he will continue his duties until March 19, 2026 without requiring any additional notifications.
Similarly, Field Marshal Asim Munir will carry out his duties as CDS and Army Chief for the next two years, without the need for any further extensions or official notifications. Officials emphasized that this is in line with the newly enacted law governing service chiefs’ tenure.

The government has highlighted that the legislative framework aims to strengthen leadership stability across Pakistan’s armed forces while ensuring operational continuity.
