Pakistan International Airlines Privatization – Claims of Transparency, But Public Trust at Stake

Islamabad (HRNW)— Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced that the privatization of Pakistan’s national airline, PIA, will be carried out through a “transparent and merit-based process.” He stated that the bidding process is scheduled for December 23 and will be broadcast live on media to eliminate any ambiguity.

During a meeting with representatives of participating companies, the Prime Minister highlighted that restoring PIA’s international flights will greatly benefit overseas Pakistanis. He further emphasized that modernizing the national airline is crucial for developing Pakistan’s tourism sector and rebuilding the country’s aviation reputation on solid foundations.

However, experts warn that despite claims of transparency, past experiences show that political and financial pressures often undermine public trust in such processes. While the Prime Minister expressed hope that the successful bidder will restore PIA’s lost reputation and confidence, the public remains skeptical whether these promises will translate into tangible results or remain mere rhetoric.
