Boom in IT sector exports welcome sign Altaf Shakoor

Karachi (HRNW)- A sharp increase in export of IT sector is a welcome sign for the national economy, showing a great potential in this field, said Pasban Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman Altaf Shakoor here Tuesday.

He said $1.4 billion IT export in a quarter indicates potential achievement of over $5 billion this FY. He said Pakistan’s IT sector is a rapidly growing, key economic driver, characterized by strong export growth, a large pool of young, English-speaking talent, and increasing global recognition as an affordable tech hub, with strengths in freelancing, software development, and BPO, despite challenges like infrastructure and funding for startups.

He said it’s a focus area for government initiatives, with ambitious export targets and supportive policies like tax holidays for startups and foreign ownership, positioning the country as a significant digital labour supplier.

Altaf Shakoor said our IT sector keeps growing as exports jump 19% in the first five months of the fiscal year, reaching $1.8 billion, according to State Bank data. The rise highlights strong global demand, supportive policies, and growing investor confidence in Pakistan’s digital economy.

He said this momentum must be continued, because a robust IT export sector is vital for economic strength. It drives GDP growth through high-value, low-carbon services and generates crucial foreign exchange.

He said this sector creates a large number of high-skilled jobs and fosters innovation by forcing continuous technological advancement. It diversifies the economy away from volatile commodities, builds a global brand for innovation, and attracts significant foreign investment.

Altaf Shakoor said by deeply integrating a nation into the digital global economy, IT exports enhance resilience and ensure long-term, sustainable development, making them a cornerstone of modern economic strategy.
