Bangladeshi Court Sentences UK MP Tulip Siddiq to Two Years in Corruption Case

Dhaka (HRNW) A Bangladeshi court has sentenced British Member of Parliament Tulip Siddiq to two years in prison after finding her guilty in a corruption case linked to financial irregularities.

The same verdict also handed down prison terms to two prominent political figures in Bangladesh:

  • Sheikh Hasina, former Prime Minister, sentenced to five years, and
  • Sheikh Rehana, her sister, sentenced to seven years.

The charges relate to alleged misuse of authority and misappropriation of public funds during previous government tenures. Tulip Siddiq—who is the niece of Sheikh Hasina—had earlier resigned from her position as UK Minister for Anti-Corruption in January, stating that she wanted to avoid any conflict of interest or ethical questions while investigations were ongoing.

British authorities and Siddiq’s legal team have not yet issued detailed responses to the ruling. Diplomatic observers say the case may carry political implications in both the UK and Bangladesh.
