Bangladesh to Hold Elections on February 12, 2026 Major Democratic Referendum Also Planned

Dhaka (HRNW)– The Bangladesh Election Commission has announced that general elections will be held on February 12, 2026.

In a televised address, the Chief Election Commissioner stated that on the same day, a referendum will also be conducted on a significant democratic reform charter.

The elections are expected to see a tough contest between former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), and Jamaat-e-Islami. However, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s party, the Awami League, has been barred from participating in the elections.

It is worth noting that last year, following violent student protests in Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina fled the country to India. Since August, an interim government has been in place under the leadership of Muhammad Yunus.
