Canberra (HRNW)- Australia has announced the closure of the Afghan embassy following the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan, in a major diplomatic move.
According to Australian media reports, the Afghan embassy will completely cease its activities after June 2026. Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade stated that it will not recognize any diplomat, honorary consul, or representative appointed by the Taliban, citing the policy of not acknowledging the Taliban government as the legitimate representative of the Afghan people.
Australian newspapers SBS News and National Tribune reported that Australia has serious concerns over the Taliban government’s alleged human rights violations, restrictions on dissent, and strict policies. The Refugee Council Australia noted that many Afghan citizens fear obtaining documents from Taliban-run institutions, causing severe difficulties for Afghans living abroad.
Experts say the closure of the Afghan embassy signals growing global distrust of the Taliban government, with its hardline and undemocratic policies pushing Afghanistan toward diplomatic and economic isolation.
