Bandung (HRNW)- At least eight people have died and more than 80 are missing after a landslide triggered by heavy rains struck the western Bandung region on Java Island early Saturday morning. Several homes were buried, and rescue operations are ongoing amid unstable ground conditions.
Abdul Muhri, spokesperson for Indonesia’s national disaster agency, said the landslide occurred around 2:30 a.m., affecting multiple villages. The military, police, and volunteers are conducting search operations using hand excavators, water pumps, and drones, but the heavy rainfall and unstable terrain are slowing progress. Witnesses reported hearing a loud rumbling sound before the disaster.
Experts warn that deforestation in Indonesia is increasing the frequency of such disasters, as trees are vital for absorbing rainwater and stabilizing the soil. Floods and landslides are common during the monsoon season from October to March, and last year, hundreds of people died while millions were displaced due to heavy rains and storms.
