Karachi (HRNW) — Another child has lost his life after falling into an open manhole, highlighting once again the severe administrative negligence in the city.
An eight-year-old boy, identified as Dilbar Ali, fell into an uncovered manhole in Korangi’s Mehran Town Sector 6G and died on the spot. The child was playing in the street with other children when the tragic incident occurred.
Rescue officials confirmed the child’s identity, while police reported that his body had been recovered from the manhole.
As in previous incidents, local authorities were nowhere to be seen. This marks the 14th such incident reported since January this year. In total, 27 people have died so far due to open manholes and drains across Karachi.
Of these fatalities, 14 were children who fell into manholes and 13 others lost their lives after falling into open drains.
Residents reported that the manhole was uncovered and filled with filthy sewage water, leaving almost no chance of survival for the child. Despite the tragedy, no official from the administration, including the Deputy Commissioner or Assistant Commissioner, arrived at the scene.
