172 Extortion Cases Registered in Karachi; Dozens of Suspects Arrested

Karachi, Pakistan (HRNW)- Sindh Interior Minister Ziaulhaq Lanjhar revealed that 172 cases of extortion were registered in Karachi between 2024 and 2025, highlighting ongoing challenges to law and order in the city. He made the statement during an appearance on Geo News’ program Geo Pakistan.

According to Minister Lanjhar, several citizens had also registered cases related to personal disputes, land conflicts, and community disagreements, claiming them as extortion. However, police investigations confirmed that 76 cases were genuine extortion incidents involving 131 suspects.

During police operations:

  • 6 suspects were killed in encounters
  • Over 100 individuals were arrested
  • 9 people were taken into custody from Qadri House

On the matter of the Sindh Police Inspector General (IG) change, the minister stated that the provincial government coordinates with the federal authorities, who propose three names. The province then approves one name and forwards it back to the federal government.

Regarding traffic management, Minister Lanjhar said that the e-Challan system has been introduced to improve road discipline, resulting in a reduction in traffic-related fatalities. He also mentioned that trailer trucks from the port are now restricted during daytime hours, while water tankers cannot be completely banned as this would affect the city’s water supply.
