German cabinet agrees to fix target for more wind power at sea

Germany is set to write a large expansion of its offshore wind power capacity into law, according to a cabinet decision on Wednesday.

The current 15-gigawatt capacity from wind turbines in the North Sea and the Baltic should be increased to 20 gigawatts by 2030, the cabinet agreed. Previous agreements matching these targets would now be fixed in law.

By 2040, the goal is 40 gigawatts, according to a draft proposal seen by dpa.

Boosting wind energy infrastructure is crucial if the German government is to meet its climate goals in the coming years. Renewable energies are a key part of the country’s plans to transition away from fossil fuels.

Germany wants renewable energy to make up 65 per cent of its energy mix by 2030, up from a current share of 40 per cent.
